I removed the game and started to reinstall it, but the "Install" window says that "Setup will install files for Steam to the following folder." So it looks to me like there's no way to install Mafia 2 without going through Steam. And if I install Steam, the mods won't work.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there a way to bypass installing Steam when you install Mafia 2?

Thanks very much.

Thanks very much, I'll try this tomorrow and let you know if it works. It's late here, I'm going to bed. Thanks again.

Quote(1) Using Steam to play the game makes it impossible to use mods because Steam won't allow mods.

(2) If I play the game without Steam I should be able to use the mods.

(3) It is possible to install the game without Steam.

Yes, you are right  <img src="/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/smile.png" alt="" data-emoticon="" srcset="/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/smile@2x.png 2x" width="20" height="20">

It's Steam setup, not Mafia 2 setup - so no wonder it wants to install Steam files.

Thanks very much for the responses. I've just downloaded v1.0. But I don't know what to do with it. I assume I reinstall the game first, but what do I do after that?

Thanks again.

Paste files of it into game folders.

Thanks again for your response. I'm reinstalling the game now. But I don't know nearly as much about how all this works as you do. So I don't understand what you mean when you say I should paste the files into the folders. I'll write more about this when the game finishes re-installing.

Thanks again.

I've re-installed the game. I've attached a pic of the folders that were automatically set up in C/Program files (x86)/Steam/Steamapps/common/mafia2. That pic is called "folders."

I've also attached a pic of the files that were created when I unzipped the file you suggested that I download. There were four items: mafia2 (which looks like a shortcut to launch the game), skidrow, steam_appid and Steamclient.dll. The pic is called "unzip."

As I said before, I don't know much about how this works. So I'd be very grateful if you could tell me which files go into which folders.

Also, I got a message from tech support at 2K Games saying that you can play mods with Steam, but I haven't been able to find anything about how to set this up either on the 2K site or Steam site.

Thanks again for your help, I appreciate your patience.

Thanks for your response. Tried to do as you suggested. I replaced the "pc" folder installed from the Mafia 2 CD with the "pc" folder from the download you sent. But when I tried to launch with the icon in the new "pc" folder, the Norton Anti-virus read it as a threat and removed the "launch" icon and shut down the launch.

This is nuts. Does this mean I have to disable Norton if I want to launch this game with mods?

Thanks again.

Thanks again.

I'm sorry I'm so slow with this, but I don't quite understand what you mean when you say:

"You drag content from crack folder named PC to your Mafia 2 PC folder then it will ask if you want to overwrite click yes, you do not need to replace folders and then you can move the Mafia 2 folder and play without need of steam."

When you say "then you can move the Mafia 2 folder", which folder am I moving, and where am I moving it to?

Again, sorry I'm slow with this and thanks again.

Thanks again, I'll try that. I have some other stuff I have to do now, but I'll check back in after I've tried this.

Thanks again.

Success. The Mafia 2 Free Ride mod is working. In case someone else is trying to figure out how to eliminate the "Appears that it was not purchased" message from Steam, here's what I did:

(1) Re-installed Mafia 2 and let it install with the Steam stuff.

(2) Downloaded the Crack v1.2 and unzipped it. There were five files

(3) Opened the Mafia 2 folder in C/Program Files (x86)/Steam/SteamApps/common/mafia ii

(4) Moved the four files from the unzipped Crack v1.2 into the mafia ii/pc folder and clicked "replace" each time.

(5) Closed the mafia ii folder and moved it from SteamApps/common to Program Files (x86).

The tech support at Steam is totally useless and not even worth bothering with unless you want to simply tell them how lousy they are. The tech support at 2K games at least tried to find a solution and actually seemed concerned when they couldn't.

So anyway, thanks very much for your help and patience, I greatly appreciate it.
