I have been studying Mafia I for a while now, and am just starting to work on some mods, corrected historic textures and may work on some of the models in game... but
Can anyone tell me what program will help to open the models? they are in 4D format and I was not sure what to use to open them. Do we need to convert them to a certain format?
I also noted that the texture are bmp and there are also DX1 files with similar names are those transparencies for the main textures? thanks for any info on this, i hope to try to possibly correct the streetcars and increase their historic accuracy...and some other things. thanks a lot.
Zmodeler is one way its a little quirky but it works for me

Matteo thanks very much i will give it a try. Glad it worked for you I am hopeful of being able to possibly edit the streetcar models to correct some inacuracies and possibly improve the texturing. thanks again.
texturing is the easiest of all modding
just use data extractor to open the files, then all the bitmaps are right there for the changing
Yes i have had data extractor working on my main study install of Mafia I for some time now. thanks. I still cant find a few textures i need to work on..do you know what the Hedge texture is? i think it may use the hanging ivy but i am not sure yet. I have been able to find the worst of the other offenders..the lime green grass and the yellow cliffs... <img src="/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/smile.png" alt="(//smile.gif)" data-emoticon="" srcset="/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/smile@2x.png 2x" width="20" height="20"> thanks and thanks for your mod work, i love a car by you i found, very nice.
