Missions
Mafia features over 20 unique missions, and many other side missions set by other mobsters. The bulk of your missions will be set by Don Salieri, head of the Salieri family. If you perform well and successfully complete the missions, Mr Salieri will reward you handsomely.
Safe Cracking
The range of missions is enormous, sometimes you will have to be the getaway driver others you'll be the main hit man. Your first mission is a classic car chase, which introduces you to valued members of the Salieri family. In another mission you will need to team up with a professional safe-cracker, whom both of you must break entry into a heavily guarded Villa. Once entry has been made you must escort the safe-cracker out of the Villa with the important documents he has stolen.
Architecture
By current standards, individual buildings in our game are worked out in unbelievable detail. We are basing the designs of the buildings on historical photographs; we have at our disposal photographs and drawings of a great number of government's architectural developments from the thirties. The textures are very fine and photo-realistic even the case of very ordinary buildings. They are not simply photographed, however. We have taken great care with tuning the and contrasts of all of the textures, paid great attention to their mapping, and to all other graphical aspects. We are creating tens of varieties of houses, apartment buildings, skyscrapers, and other buildings. There are many unique buildings in this game: cinemas, hotels, churches, fire stations, theatres, banks, and so on, which assist the player as points for orientation and are never repeated.
Traffic
Tens of vehicles move through the town, pedestrians walk around, and the police maintain law and order. If the player commits an offence or crime in public, the police pursue him. Apart from the ordinary traffic, we are also busy creating a model of a public transport system. The player will be able to move around not only on foot or by driving a car but he will also be able to use a tram or elevated railway.
Indoor Locations
The buildings, in which missions will take place, are in a class of their own. There will be about thirty of them scattered around the town. These buildings are worked out down to the last detail, and in quality they are near rendered animation, because in the enclosed areas we can afford the maximum number of
polygons. These are buildings such as a pseudo Gothic church, a disreputable hotel, a huge Town Gallery, disused prison, a motel, apartments of the main characters, and docks. Their design is realistic an logical so that the player can orient himself in the environment. The days of many hours of play spent wandering through confusing mazes are gone.
Tommy Angelo
This is the main character of the game, and is the role played by yourself in the single player game. Tommy is a cab driver who, due to unforeseen circumstances, ends up working for the Mob. A nice guy who had a hard childhood, he ends up doing all kinds of things for the mob that would make most of us cringe. However, he does have a conscience, which from time to time leads him in the opposite direction.
Norman
Norman is a tough Detective, a typical representative of a detective of American tough school who has a bit of a reputation as a lout, he dislikes everyone. Tommy is narrating his life story to Norman, and it must be said that it isn't at all easy for him.
Don Salieri
The Boss of the Family that Tom is working for. Salieri is a man who's lived through a lot, and there aren't many things that make him lose his cool. He is one of those Mafiosi for whom the money wasn't the main reason for building up his position. Although he will stop at nothing to achieve his goals, his first course of action is not necessarily the most violent or aggressive one. He is friendly, but when it comes down to it, he can get really angry. His motto is 'business first' and friendship must be put aside sometimes.
Paulie
Tom's gang-leader. He?s a small guy, full of energy. He is a choleric and sometimes behaves quite unpredictably. However, when he takes a liking to someone, he is the truest friend there can be and is always reliable - if he isn't busy causing you some trouble, that is. Paulie and Tom like each other immediately and become good friends; they work together quite often.
Sam
Another of Tom's colleagues. He is a big, friendly guy, with a nice smile. In spite of his size, he is timid and a little clumsy, and doesn't talk much. He often works with Tom and Paulie, and they are good friends.
An offer you can't refuse...
The main character in the story is a cab driver named Thomas Angelo, who is lucky to be one of the few employed during the United States depression. However as with all good things this soon ends when he finds gangsters working for Don Salieri jumping in the back of his taxi ordering him to lose their pursuers ? gangsters working for Don Morello - which he duly did. As the gangsters observed his above average driving skills they offered him work but he refused. When he thought his brush with excitement was over the same persuing gangsters found his cab and destroyed it after giving him a swift beating. Tommy?s only means of income was destroyed right there and so he had one choice - he decided to go and see Don Salieri to see if the job offer was still open and took it.
Omerta
Initially he loved his new life. Tommy had newfound respect, money and power and all he had to do to keep it was give beatings here and there and speak to the right people. Tommy met the girl of his dreams and married her and had a child with her. All was going well for Tommy. He had everything he had wanted until he started to see the underbelly of his new life style, the side that he had not considered - the assassinations, the murders and the dangerous car chases that could so easily have resulted in death. Even this though was not as low as his chosen path would sink. Soon he was ordered to start killing people he knew, people close to his loved ones, even people who had helped him out in the past. Don Salieri believed that his assignments would be completely and totally carried out all of the time although this was not the case.
Soon Tommy decides he has but one way out...
